Star Wars Galaxies : Looking Ahead to 2011

by cow on Jan.01, 2011, under SWG News

In the final Star Wars Galaxies producer’s letter for 2010, Tony “Teesquared” Tyson talks about some of the bigger news of the year, not the least of which is the Witches of Dathomir update that is now live. In addition, Tyson talks a bit about the plans for the upcoming year.

And we’ll give you MORE =]. The long awaited Officer update will be coming out early next year. Hjal has already started discussion with the Officer Senator and the work has begun. The Galactic Civil War 2 update is also first on the list for next year. As mentioned before, this update will have a focus on space and player cities. We will also be adding more ways to discover Rare Loot System chests that don’t involve combat.

The dev team likes to give out surprises. Every once in a while we find surprises too. We discovered some, what we believe to be, “never before released” structures in our game. Well we’ll be giving these to you next year as well.

Enter the Mandalorians

by credits4swg on Dec.30, 2010, under Swg Credits, SWG GUIDE, SWG News

A weekly guide and discussion by Larry Everett about the yet-to-be-released game Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Welcome, fans of Star Wars and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Some would say you cannot be a true Star Wars fan unless you are a fan of Mandalorians. Followers of these space-Spartans bury themselves deep in the warrior culture. The bearers of the iconic T-shaped visor have inspired costume after costume, scores of fan sites, collections of comic books, and bunches of books. The author of many of those books, Karen Traviss, created a whole independent language called Mando’a.

The Mandalorians’ history starts with a species called the Taung, who were renowned throughout the galaxy for their amazing conquests and advanced war technology. Calling themselves Mandalorians after their leader, Mandalore the First, these crusaders conquered all of what would be known as the Mandalore Sector, assimilating the native species into the culture of war and honor.

The depth of the Mandalorian culture cannot be covered in one article, but I would like to take a few key figures from the culture, study them, and contemplate their role in shaping Star Wars: The Old Republic. Let us explore this together after the break.

Ib’tuur jatne tuur ash’ad kyr’amur!

Canderous Ordo, who would later be known as Mandalore the Preserver, started his career as a commander under Mandalore the Ultimate in the Mandalorian Wars, about three centuries before the time of SWTOR. Ordo was among the soldiers in the Battle of Malachor V. This battle was a devastating blow to the Mandalorians, and they surrendered. Mandalore the Ultimate was executed by Revan, and the rest of them were stripped of their armor and honor.

Like most of the surviving Mandalorians, Ordo became a mercenary. He ended up on Taris working as an enforcer for the Exchange. This was the second time he met Revan, under the guise of a soldier for Bastila Shan. He would eventually help Revan and company off Taris before it was assaulted by Malak. From there he traveled with Revan to hunt down the Sith Lord. After Malak’s defeat, Ordo and the rest of Revan’s companions received the Cross of Glory award from the Republic.

When Revan left to find the true Sith Emperor in the Unknown Regions, he left instructions for Ordo to unite the Mandalorians, and prepare for the coming war. Ultimately, Ordo failed. For centuries after Ordo’s passing, Mandalorians would be without a unified leader until Mandalore the Lesser.

Mandalore the Lesser, whose real name is unknown, is not remember for great leadership, as Ordo is, but rather he is known as being a servant of the Sith Empire during the Old Republic times. The Mandalorians had been without a leader for centuries at the time they accepted him as Mandalore. He asked for all the Mandalorians to unite against the Jedi and the Republic, and all the clans came to his aid. His blockade of the Hydian Way trade route made him infamous throughout the galaxy, also secured him as the Emperor’s pawn. Although the blockade was eventually defeated, it had left a disastrous mark on the Republic.

Mandalore the Lesser had been working for the Empire long before the Hydian blockade. In fact, the Empire was responsible for his rise to power; Imperial agents assisted him by rigging Geonosian arena fights, in which he was a participant, thus helping him rise to the top very quickly. Mandalorian culture praised these fights and shows of physical strength. It is no mystery why the clans united behind him.

After the Mandalorian defeat at the Hydian Way, Mandalore the Lesser offered up to his people a challenge he called the Great Hunt. A man named Artus was crowned champion, then subsequently challenged Mandalore the Lesser to a duel. Artus won, killing the Mandalore and taking up the title Mandalore the Vindicated.

Not a lot is known about Mandalore the Vindicated, but we do know he was a supporter of the Sith Empire. When Jicoln Cadera rose up against Artus, claiming they should follow the ways of Mandalore the Preserver by joining the Republic, Cadera’s Mandalorians were attacked and defeated. Artus secured the Mandalorians as cautious allies of the Emperor.

Some fans call Boba Fett the worst example of what it means to be Mandalorian. Yet without him appearing on the Star Wars Holiday Special or capturing Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back, there would be no Mandalorian fan following (Fandalorians). His T-shape helmet gave a cold, heartless stare which begged the audience to find out more. Who was this masked man? Fett’s perplexity and prowess prompted nerdcore rapper MC Chris to write, “I’m a question wrapped inside an enigma; Get inside the slave one. Find your homing signal; From Endor to Hoth, Ripley to Spock; I’ll find what you want, but there’s gonna be a cost.”

Even though he may have been a poor Mandalorian, he was one of the best bounty hunters in the galaxy. He worked for some of the biggest names in the galaxy. As seen in A New Hope (Special Edition) and Return of the Jedi, Jabba the Hutt hired him to capture Han Solo. Darth Vader also employed him on occasion. The Dark Lord’s knowledge of Fett’s tactics prompted Vader to order, “No disintegrations.”

As Boba Fett aged, he became less self absorbed and more focused on the preservation of his people and his culture. And even though he was a clone, the Mandalorians accepted Fett as Mandalore. He would eventually lead the Mandalorians in the Yuuzahn Vong War and beyond.

Boba Fett’s suit of gadgets, grappling hooks, and flame throwers clearly inspired the Bounty Hunter class in SWTOR, but what other influences can we find? In a developers blog about the Bounty Hunter class, Daniel Erickson (who seems to get a quote in every one of my articles) says, “As a Bounty Hunter you are, and always will be, your own person. You start with nothing and work your way up, make a name for yourself and eventually travel in circles with Darths and Moffs, intelligence officers and governors, but you never become one of them.” That statement is a pure call back to Boba Fett. He was and will always be portrayed as a loner doing things for his own reasons.

I also believe we will find other influences of Mandalorians throughout the stories of SWTOR. I mentioned Jicoln Cadera because I believe his influence will play a role, if not in the Bounty Hunter class story, then in other class stories. I would not be surprised at all if the player were given the choice to do something for supporters of Mandalore the Vindicated or for supporters of Mandalore the Preserver.

As I said before, there is no way to fit the depth of this culture into one article, but I hope I got you thinking. What role do you believe Mandalorians will play in the stories and themes of SWTOR? Where will they fit in your character’s story? What are your thoughts? I want to hear them.

Technological Research of Star and Galaxies

by credits4swg on Nov.26, 2010, under SWG News

In Star Wars Galaxies, the technological research is really important to the whole game. Also, setting up a technological research is the difficult task for the new players. Therefore, the players must grasp the strategy to build the technological. In the following, I will introduce you a smart way to do this task.

Firstly, before you do the technological research, you need to set up a center of technology. In the center of technology, you can assign a part of scientists to do the research for you. After the assignment, the system will produce the research places automatically. The more number of the scientists in the center of technology, the high production of the research you can get. The technology in Star Wars Galaxies can be divided into four aspects. They contain the universe. The economy, the science and the landing fight. Due to the extra function all the technologies will produce, the number of the research places is rather short.

Therefore, we will choose the technology which can produce the large effects to the whole game. After a long time of playing, you will find that there are two absolute important technologies in the early period. The first one is the level four of technology in the economy. After your research is done, you need to build the power plant. When the electric power increases, the population will grow at a quick rate. The second is the level five of technology in the universe. When the research is over, you can build a royal household and then explore the bases.

Establish New Bases in Star Wars Galaxies

by credits4swg on Nov.26, 2010, under SWG News

Due to the need of upgrade quickly in Star Wars Galaxies, it is quite necessary for the players to establish new bases. But before the players begin to take actions, there are some tips that the players must pay much attention.

At first, one condition is needed to set up a new base in Star Wars Galaxies. The players must reach level five of planet in the aspect of technological research. The, they need to build of royal household which level must arrive at level one in the land of main base. In the following, the players should have the ability to collect eighty free citizens and one thousand two hundred and fifty concrete irons and nine thousand golden coins. The fourth step is to find a empty planet near the edge of universe. To click the empty land in this planet, there will appear a choice to establish the new base. Next after you make sure of this choice, your transport spacecraft will be taken off. When your transport spacecraft arrives in the destination, a new base will be set up at once. The last step is to build a guiding office to supervise the corruption.

Therefore, the rate of corruption will decrease. However, if the corruption is too serious, the electric power will be decreased. And the efficiency of the entire worker also will be affected. At last, the whole base will be broken down. Therefore, the guiding office is very important. The wise choose for the player is that you should set up the numbers of bases according to your ability.

GU16 Nym’s Themepark

by credits4swg on Nov.26, 2010, under SWG News

Development discussion topic for GU16 Nym’s Themepark.

I’ll be using this first post to communicate known issues that I will be fixing. Hopefully that will save some time.

The new Jinkins J-1 Rifle needs better sounds.

Known issues that probably will not be resolved:

The player cannot complete old Nym Theme Park quests.
Nym, Jinkins, Kole and Vana appear as red attackables for theme park final quest.
Weeds that are not needed in weed whacker collection can be pulled.

Issues that should be fixed:

Vana Sage requires the player to be level 57, not 56 as intended.
Weed Whacker Quest gives out a lot of XP.
If the player manages to complete a side quest collection (i.e. prisoner rescue, miner DNA), and the quest doesn’t update. The player may become stuck.
The mining cave side content has a misplaced waypoint that the player must go to before their quests update properly. Failing to update the quest properly may lead to collections that are completed but quests that cannot be completed and the player getting stuck.
Some weeds cannot be pulled. Specific locations so far: 447 12 5044 and 596 12 5059
Elites do not respawn in the dungeons.
Weed Whacker reward collectible should be communicated to player when received.
The weed whacker weed collectibles have a use and collect radial option.
Weed Whacker Quest /Collection is picked up in the profanity filter.
When the player finishes the Nym Theme Park main quest line and speaks to Nym again, Nym will attempt to give the player the last quest over again.
Weed Whacker spawns need to be increased, timer increased.
The boss terminals may not work if the player fails to kill the boss within the time allowed (or if the boss disappears early).
Boss Terminals will give feed back even if player doesn’t have a quest for the terminal.
Ding the Kusak is stuck.
Jinkins J-1 Rifle requies a blaster rifle barrel but is a kinetic weapon.
Some furniture in the Stronghold is misplaced.
Stronghold Duty Mission Badge should be renamed so everyone knows it is the Weed Whacker collection.
Weeds can be pulled even if the player doesn’t need them for quest completion. The weeds should give the player a system message communicating this point.

Producer Note: February 5th, 2010

by credits4swg on Mar.25, 2010, under swg characters, SWG Credit Farming Guide, Swg Credits, SWG News

Since GU15 went live last week, the team has continued to work on the update and incorporate your feedback. We added a “GCW Personal Contribution” radial menu option to the war terminal to help players see how they are contributing to the GCW. We polished and tweaked the city invasions to make them more enjoyable and challenging. We put in a tutorial interface that can be used at any time to get a waypoint or as a help reference (“/gcwSkirmishCityHelp”). And for the next hot fix, we’ve made all the GCW Battle Worn Armor destructible. I actually had to pull the team off the GCW enhancements and get them going on GU16 and EFOL. They are all really excited about this update and want to make sure it’s in the best shape possible for you to enjoy. Don’t worry though; they will be back on GCW later this year. For GCW part 2, we are planning to refine and expand the systems introduced in this first update and turn our focus to space and player cities.

It’s really fun to watch players compete for region and planet control. Congratulations to the Rebels for just edging out the Imperials in the Galaxy Wide GCW score (Rebel 52% vs. Imperial 48%). Imperials need to step it up some to grab hold of the galaxy again. Good luck to you all.

Want to know how the Galaxy Wide score is calculated? Log into DevH and find out.

Also on the war front, MMORPG posted an interview with me covering this update. Be sure and check it out

Pub 15 City Defense, Part I

by credits4swg on Mar.25, 2010, under swg characters, SWG Credit Farming Guide, SWG News

I decided to try the City Defense part of Publish 15, and headed to Dearic with my Rebel Bounty Hunter. I got there at the end of the Construction of Reinforcement part of the day, just minutes before the Imperial attack of the city.

The Rebel General was appropriately barricaded.

I was fully buffed and pulled my MagnaGuard Droid, and awaited the attack.

NOTES:

The Imperial attackers were cl 60 and 60 elite, so probably did not need the buff.
All the other Rebels used Super Battle Droids (SBD). No love for the MagnaGuard?
I found the Mandalorian Helmet on the bazaar and snapped it up
