Enter the Mandalorians

A weekly guide and discussion by Larry Everett about the yet-to-be-released game Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Welcome, fans of Star Wars and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Some would say you cannot be a true Star Wars fan unless you are a fan of Mandalorians. Followers of these space-Spartans bury themselves deep in the warrior culture. The bearers of the iconic T-shaped visor have inspired costume after costume, scores of fan sites, collections of comic books, and bunches of books. The author of many of those books, Karen Traviss, created a whole independent language called Mando’a.

The Mandalorians’ history starts with a species called the Taung, who were renowned throughout the galaxy for their amazing conquests and advanced war technology. Calling themselves Mandalorians after their leader, Mandalore the First, these crusaders conquered all of what would be known as the Mandalore Sector, assimilating the native species into the culture of war and honor.

The depth of the Mandalorian culture cannot be covered in one article, but I would like to take a few key figures from the culture, study them, and contemplate their role in shaping Star Wars: The Old Republic. Let us explore this together after the break.

Ib’tuur jatne tuur ash’ad kyr’amur!

Canderous Ordo, who would later be known as Mandalore the Preserver, started his career as a commander under Mandalore the Ultimate in the Mandalorian Wars, about three centuries before the time of SWTOR. Ordo was among the soldiers in the Battle of Malachor V. This battle was a devastating blow to the Mandalorians, and they surrendered. Mandalore the Ultimate was executed by Revan, and the rest of them were stripped of their armor and honor.

Like most of the surviving Mandalorians, Ordo became a mercenary. He ended up on Taris working as an enforcer for the Exchange. This was the second time he met Revan, under the guise of a soldier for Bastila Shan. He would eventually help Revan and company off Taris before it was assaulted by Malak. From there he traveled with Revan to hunt down the Sith Lord. After Malak’s defeat, Ordo and the rest of Revan’s companions received the Cross of Glory award from the Republic.

When Revan left to find the true Sith Emperor in the Unknown Regions, he left instructions for Ordo to unite the Mandalorians, and prepare for the coming war. Ultimately, Ordo failed. For centuries after Ordo’s passing, Mandalorians would be without a unified leader until Mandalore the Lesser.

Mandalore the Lesser, whose real name is unknown, is not remember for great leadership, as Ordo is, but rather he is known as being a servant of the Sith Empire during the Old Republic times. The Mandalorians had been without a leader for centuries at the time they accepted him as Mandalore. He asked for all the Mandalorians to unite against the Jedi and the Republic, and all the clans came to his aid. His blockade of the Hydian Way trade route made him infamous throughout the galaxy, also secured him as the Emperor’s pawn. Although the blockade was eventually defeated, it had left a disastrous mark on the Republic.

Mandalore the Lesser had been working for the Empire long before the Hydian blockade. In fact, the Empire was responsible for his rise to power; Imperial agents assisted him by rigging Geonosian arena fights, in which he was a participant, thus helping him rise to the top very quickly. Mandalorian culture praised these fights and shows of physical strength. It is no mystery why the clans united behind him.

After the Mandalorian defeat at the Hydian Way, Mandalore the Lesser offered up to his people a challenge he called the Great Hunt. A man named Artus was crowned champion, then subsequently challenged Mandalore the Lesser to a duel. Artus won, killing the Mandalore and taking up the title Mandalore the Vindicated.

Not a lot is known about Mandalore the Vindicated, but we do know he was a supporter of the Sith Empire. When Jicoln Cadera rose up against Artus, claiming they should follow the ways of Mandalore the Preserver by joining the Republic, Cadera’s Mandalorians were attacked and defeated. Artus secured the Mandalorians as cautious allies of the Emperor.

Some fans call Boba Fett the worst example of what it means to be Mandalorian. Yet without him appearing on the Star Wars Holiday Special or capturing Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back, there would be no Mandalorian fan following (Fandalorians). His T-shape helmet gave a cold, heartless stare which begged the audience to find out more. Who was this masked man? Fett’s perplexity and prowess prompted nerdcore rapper MC Chris to write, “I’m a question wrapped inside an enigma; Get inside the slave one. Find your homing signal; From Endor to Hoth, Ripley to Spock; I’ll find what you want, but there’s gonna be a cost.”

Even though he may have been a poor Mandalorian, he was one of the best bounty hunters in the galaxy. He worked for some of the biggest names in the galaxy. As seen in A New Hope (Special Edition) and Return of the Jedi, Jabba the Hutt hired him to capture Han Solo. Darth Vader also employed him on occasion. The Dark Lord’s knowledge of Fett’s tactics prompted Vader to order, “No disintegrations.”

As Boba Fett aged, he became less self absorbed and more focused on the preservation of his people and his culture. And even though he was a clone, the Mandalorians accepted Fett as Mandalore. He would eventually lead the Mandalorians in the Yuuzahn Vong War and beyond.

Boba Fett’s suit of gadgets, grappling hooks, and flame throwers clearly inspired the Bounty Hunter class in SWTOR, but what other influences can we find? In a developers blog about the Bounty Hunter class, Daniel Erickson (who seems to get a quote in every one of my articles) says, “As a Bounty Hunter you are, and always will be, your own person. You start with nothing and work your way up, make a name for yourself and eventually travel in circles with Darths and Moffs, intelligence officers and governors, but you never become one of them.” That statement is a pure call back to Boba Fett. He was and will always be portrayed as a loner doing things for his own reasons.

I also believe we will find other influences of Mandalorians throughout the stories of SWTOR. I mentioned Jicoln Cadera because I believe his influence will play a role, if not in the Bounty Hunter class story, then in other class stories. I would not be surprised at all if the player were given the choice to do something for supporters of Mandalore the Vindicated or for supporters of Mandalore the Preserver.

As I said before, there is no way to fit the depth of this culture into one article, but I hope I got you thinking. What role do you believe Mandalorians will play in the stories and themes of SWTOR? Where will they fit in your character’s story? What are your thoughts? I want to hear them.

SWG Smuggler Leveling Guide

by credits4swg on Dec.23, 2010, under SWG Leveling Guide

Smugglers are honest traders that carry the goods that the Empire does not want the average citizen to have from planet to planet in the Star Wars Galaxies universe. The Jedi may contemplate the spiritual aspects of the force while the bounty hunters track down the scum of the universe, but a true Star Wars game would not be complete without incorporating characters that represented the thin gray line that exists between good and evil.

Leveling a Smuggler in Star Wars Galaxies takes patience and persistence. The process of grinding experience by killing monsters is the same in virtually every mmorpg, and of course, knowing about agro control is a must for any mmorpg character. Levlling up the skills unique to the smuggler class in Star Wars Galaxies involves doing contraband missions for the galaxy’s crime bosses.

Smuggler Combat Considerations
Because most of the combat interaction in Star Wars Galaxies is ranged, smugglers are at a distinct disadvantage over the other professions. Smuggler weapons have a maximum range of 45 meters on their weapons, but most players do not choose a smuggler to be the peak of combat perfection. The Jedi, the Commando, and the Bounty Hunter all fill that role in a better matter. Star Wars Galaxies smugglers, like their real-life counterparts, are more concerned with the movement of goods that are in high demand and usually not legal.

The smuggler combat skills are needed for PvP (player versus player) missions, and it is easier to grind the levels up earlier in the game and gain needed faction by killing non-player characters (NPCs) that give faction gains that the smuggler needs.

Smuggler Missions
Killing monsters gives a Star Wars Galaxies smuggler character combat level experience to increase his combat level. Dirty fighting is a part of the experience of the smuggler class, but it is also necessary for characters to move contraband from system to system or different places within the same planet. To gain experience in the skills unique to the profession, a Star Wars Galaxies smuggler must complete contraband quests.

Contraband items can be looted from mobs or from ships destroyed in spacefighter combat, but the only use for contraband items in Star Wars Galaxies is completing smuggler missions. Completing the missions yields faction with the crime bosses, but the higher the level of the missions, the less faction they reward. A curious design quirk of the game causes less faction to be needed the higher a smuggler’s level within his criminal organization is.

Smuggler missions fall into two types, the first is the normal mission and the second is the PvP mission. If a player fails at either type of mission, a bounty is placed on his head and he may find bounty hunters tracking him down.

The Star Wars Galaxies Smuggler
The smuggler fills the role of the rogue in Star Wars galaxies and can get into places that have been locked down or out of tight spots. Players who enjoy role-playing shadier, but not outright evil characters may take up the smuggler class to further their own ends. A Star Wars Galaxies smuggler should be careful. One wrong move and a Star Wars Galaxies smuggler may find himself being tracked down by a bounty hunter.

Getting Star Wars Galaxies Credits by Doing Missions

by credits4swg on Dec.23, 2010, under Swg Credits, SWG GUIDE

Missions are short term quests that denizens of the galaxy ask adventurers to complete. These can be simple delivery tasks, a job hunting down a certain kind of monster, or in the case of bounty hunters tracking down one of the notorious criminals of the galaxy.

Each mission gives the player some credits and using certain terminals can give the player faction with either the Empire or the Rebellion, depending on which faction in the civil war the player has sided on. These will provide the bulk of money to the average player, as farming is possible in Star Wars Galaxies, but it is not as profitable as it is in other games.

Gaining Star Wars Galaxies Credits by Finding Exceptional Loot
Star Wars players do not go seeking powerful swords, although some items, such as the crystals used to make light sabers are in high demand. Even though magical items do not drop off the monstrous and not-so-monstrous creatures to be found in the Empire, it does happen that sometimes a non-player character possesses a well-crafted item that they reluctantly part with only after being forced to give it up.

A more practical way to do this is through reverse engineering of starship components. This loot can be obtained by pilots or gunners and then sold to a structures traders who specializes in building ships

Three Ways About Star Wars Galaxies Credit Guide

Entertainer’s Star Wars Galaxies Credit Guide
As mentioned in the Entertainer’s Leveling Guide, entertainers make a good portion of their money from the tips other players give them. After a hard day of grinding experience, there wounds a person suffers are not only physical, but mental. Watching a dancer or a musician gives an adventurer time to relax. The best thing to do is just be there when grinding experience, as there are players who will not tip an entertainer who is away from his keyboard.

Simple Ways to Make Sure SWG Characters Have Money

How to Play this Group-Friendly Class in Star Wars Galaxies

by credits on Dec.14, 2010, under SWG GUIDE

Ask any officer and they will tell you they are one of the most important parts of any military. The enlisted people under them may have a different view of the matter, but officers play an important role in the real armed forces and the armed forcies of Sony Online Entertainment’s Star Wars Galaxies mmorpg.

The commandos, pilots, and a few other classes players can choose in Star Wars Galaxies can all benefit from including an officer in their groups. Officers in the game fill the same role as bards in other mmorpgs, like Everquest, by enhancing the abilities of the groups that are lucky enough to include one when they go out to save the galaxy.
Leveling Up as an Officer
Increasing a character’s combat level in Star Wars Galaxies is a matter of completing a series of quests and finding the monsters that will give the character the most experience with minimal effort as described in the Beginner’s Jedi Leveling Guide. While officers are capable of soloing well, that is not what the game designers had in mind when the class was first concieved.

One of the first abilities given to officers is terrain negotiation which lets the members of the officer’s group move more quickly over terrain in Star Wars Galaxies. As an officer gains combat levels, he gains abilities that let the members of his group shoot more accurately and to lower defenses of his group’s opponents.

At the highest levels, the officer character class can aid in the targeting of grenades and artillery. Early in his career, an officer will be given a specialized backpack. As he increases in combat level, the amount of space available for items in this pack increases. (The above information is slightly out of date and the source seemed to be confused as to the backpack’s purpose.)

Yes, Sir – the Rewards of Playing an Officer
Bards, the counterpart of the Star Wars Galaxies officer in many mmorpgs, are in great demand because of their group buff abilities, but like the bard, officers do not do as well outside of the group, despite having good combat skills. The Officer class in Star Wars Galaxies shines when leading others into battle. A player who solos with an officer may succeed but is not using the abilities of his class to his full advantage.

Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided PC

by credits4swg on Dec.05, 2010, under SWG GUIDE

Will you fight for the Empire or will you fight against it? Or will you stay out of it altogether? Or – better yet, will you deal with both sides to turn a healthy profit? These are all questions that you will have to consider when you choose to play this game…

The basic premise of the game is that you are a single person struggling for success amongst a galaxy containing thousands of other people, each of which is controlled by another human being. The wars are fought by the players, the economy is driven by them too. Entering a cantina, human players will entertain you with both dance and song. A human barkeep may offer you drinks, or even a plate of food.

This online game is all about the players. What will you do? Basically, the sky is the limit! Do you want to dabble in the culinary arts, shoot things down with a long-ranged rifle and then come home to a nice evening of playing a slitherhorn or a fizz in the local cantina? If so, that is possible! You can combine any number of professions and skills to form a unique character for yourself.

One of the best parts of Galaxies is the fact that players themselves have to help each other through the game. That’s the spirit we’ve taken with this guide… which is, of course, completely FREE. We’ve filled in some of the basic facts of the game, and given players the tools to get started. Beyond that, the game is so wide-open, we’ve left it open to you, the players, to help us fill in the gaps. Send us your best tips for each of the sections of this guide, including tips onRaces, Professions, Crafting, Harvesting, the Economy, Battle, PvP, Planets, and Commands. Or, if you just feel like getting your player seen, send a picture of him/her to the Community section (along with your name) and we’ll keep a yearbook of sorts to show off the various and sundry personalities of Galaxies.
